Route 1 (The Ring Road) is the ultimate Icelandic road trip, stretching 1,322 km around the island. The road is 98% paved and generally two lanes, but don't underestimate it. You will cross high mountain passes (Öxnadalsheiði), vast lava deserts (Möðrudalsöræfi), and narrow coastal fjords. The driving experience changes every hour. Warning: Sheep roam freely on the road in the countryside. Keep your eyes on the verge, not just the scenery.

Logistics & Timing

Minimum time. 7 days is the absolute bare minimum to see it safely.

Recommended time. 10 to 14 days allows for the Westfjords or puffin detours.

Direction. Counter-clockwise (South first) is most popular to get the 'heavy' sightseeing done early. Clockwise (North first) is better if bad weather is hitting the South coast.

Gas. Never pass a gas station if you are below half a tank in the East or North-East.

How many days do you need for the Iceland Ring Road?

While physically possible in 5 or 6 days, a minimum of 7 to 8 days is highly recommended for the summer. In winter, allow 10 to 14 days due to reduced daylight and potential road closures.

Do you need a 4x4 for the Ring Road?

In summer (June to August), a 2WD vehicle is perfectly adequate as the entire Route 1 is paved. From October to April, a 4WD is essential for safely navigating snow and ice.

Which direction is best to drive the Ring Road?

Most travelers go counter-clockwise (South Coast first) to hit the biggest attractions early. However, going clockwise can help you avoid bad weather systems if the forecast looks poor in the south.
