Story & Legend
Reynisfjara is widely considered the most beautiful non-tropical beach in the world. Its roaring Atlantic waves and a cave of basalt columns (Hálsanefshellir) create a gothic, dramatic atmosphere featured in Game of Thrones. The sea stacks rising from the ocean just offshore, known as Reynisdrangar, are said to be trolls dragging a three-masted ship to land who were turned to stone by the rising sun.
Geology & Science
The beach is composed of eroded volcanic rock (basalt). The famous Gardar cliff features some of the best columnar jointing in Iceland, formed by cooling lava. The powerful waves are due to the fact that there is no landmass between here and Antarctica, allowing the ocean swells to build immense energy.
Safety
EXTREME DANGER. This is the deadliest beach in Iceland due to 'Sneaker Waves' – massive waves that appear suddenly and surge much further up the beach than expected. Never turn your back on the sea. Do not climb on the basalt columns if the tide is incoming. Several fatal accidents have occurred here. Obey the warning light system at the entrance.
Photo Tip
The basalt columns make for an amazing backdrop for portraits. For the sea stacks, walk towards the western end of the beach (away from the cave) to see them separated. The mood here is best captured on stormy, grey days which enhance the black sand's texture.
Insider Tip
The basalt columns are stunning, but the most dramatic photos are actually taken from the eastern edge of the beach looking back at the Reynisdrangar sea stacks, away from the main crowd.
Best Time to Visit
Low tide is essential for safety and access to the basalt cave. Visit before 9:00 AM or after 6:00 PM to avoid massive tour bus crowds.
What to Bring
Windproof and waterproof outer layers are non-negotiable. Sturdy hiking boots are mandatory; the wet black pebbles will ruin regular sneakers.
