2WD vs 4x4: Which Do You Actually Need?
Choosing the wrong vehicle type is the most expensive mistake tourists make. Here's an honest breakdown.
2WD / Economy
A 2WD is a great choice if you're sticking to paved roads in summer. It's lighter on fuel and easier to park in Reykjavík.

4x4 / SUV
A 4x4 is the only way to legally access Iceland's Highlands and F-roads. In winter, the extra grip and ground clearance are a genuine safety advantage.

Iceland's unique terrain means unique insurance options. Here's what each one covers — and whether you actually need it.
CDW – Collision Damage Waiver
Included with every rental. Reduces your liability for collision damage to a fixed excess (self-risk), typically €2,000–€3,500. Does not cover tyres, undercarriage, or windshield.

GP – Gravel Protection
Covers damage from loose gravel — the most common type of damage in Iceland. Flying rocks from oncoming cars on unpaved roads can chip paint, crack windshields, and dent panels.
Highly recommended
SAAP – Sand & Ash Protection
Covers damage caused by volcanic sand and ash storms, which can strip paint down to bare metal in minutes. Essential if you're driving along the south coast near Vík or Skeiðarársandur.
Recommended for south coast
TP – Theft Protection
Iceland has very low crime rates, so theft protection is rarely essential. However, it's usually inexpensive to add and provides peace of mind for valuables left in the car.

Windshield & Tyre Protection
Standard CDW does not cover windshield or tyre damage. Given Iceland's gravel roads, this add-on can save you €300–€800 per wheel if you hit a pothole at speed.

Super CDW / Zero Excess

Winter tyres are mandatory
From November 1 to April 14, studded or winter tyres are required by law on all vehicles.
Fill up before remote stretches
Petrol stations in the Westfjords and East Iceland can be 200+ km apart. Always top off when you can.

Road conditions change rapidly. The official road.is website shows real-time road closures, ice warnings, and wind alerts.
Single-lane bridges
Iceland has many one-lane bridges (marked "Einbreið brú"). The car closer to the bridge has right of way. Flash headlights to signal.
