Story & Legend
In 1973, this US Navy DC-3 ran out of fuel and crash-landed on the black sands. Everyone survived. It is now a haunting landmark and one of Iceland's most photographed sites. You can hike the 4km (one way) or take the paid shuttle bus that runs frequently from the parking lot.
Geology & Science
The plane rests on a glacial outwash plain (sandur), a vast expanse of black volcanic sand created by sub-glacial eruptions from the nearby Mýrdalsjökull ice cap.
Safety
The walk is completely exposed to the elements. In winter or fog, it is extremely easy to get disoriented and lost. Do not attempt the hike in bad weather; take the bus or skip it.
Photo Tip
Sunrise or midnight sun is best to avoid crowds. The contrast of the white fuselage against the black sand creates an otherworldly, almost Martian landscape.
Insider Tip
If you want photos without people climbing all over the plane, take the very first shuttle bus of the day, or walk out there before the shuttle starts operating.
Best Time to Visit
Very early morning or late evening. Avoid walking out during high winds or winter snowstorms, as there is absolutely zero shelter on the barren beach.
What to Bring
Extreme wind protection. The flat 4km expanse of black sand acts like a wind tunnel, blasting you with cold air and sand.
