Story & Legend
Skógafoss is one of the biggest and most powerful waterfalls in Iceland (25m wide, 60m drop). According to folklore, the first Viking settler in the area, Þrasi Þórólfsson, buried a chest of gold in a cave behind the waterfall. Locals say that years later, a young boy found the chest but could only grasp the ring on the side before the chest disappeared again. The ring is now allegedly on the church door at Skógar Museum nearby. For hikers, the staircase next to the falls is the beginning of the Fimmvörðuháls trail, which leads between two glaciers (Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull) to Þórsmörk.
Geology & Science
The cliff from which Skógafoss falls is actually the former coastline of Iceland. After the last Ice Age, the land rose due to isostatic rebound (weight of glaciers lifting), pushing the coastline 5km south to its current location. The spray from the falls is so intense that it creates a micro-climate where moss grows abundantly.
Safety
Be prepared to get soaked; waterproof clothing is mandatory if you get close. The metal staircase to the viewing platform at the top (over 500 steps) is steep and can be slippery in winter. In icy conditions, spikes (crampons) are highly recommended for the stairs.

Skógafoss produces a massive amount of spray, which guarantees a single or double rainbow whenever the sun is shining. The best time for rainbows is mid-morning or late afternoon. Use a person in the foreground (wearing a yellow or red jacket) to show the sheer scale of the 60m drop.

Everyone photographs the front, but if you climb the steps to the top and walk just 15 minutes along the Fimmvörðuháls trail, you'll find breathtaking canyon views and smaller waterfalls completely to yourself.

Early morning (around 8:00 AM) gives you the best chance to see a full double rainbow in the mist without hundreds of people in your shot.
