Story & Legend
Located in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park, this beast represents nature's raw power. Don't miss the short hike upstream to see the elegant Selfoss waterfall. Dettifoss is reputedly the most powerful waterfall in Europe by volume (193 m³/s). It is so loud that the ground trembles beneath your feet. Movie buffs will recognize it as the opening scene of Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus', where the alien engineer sacrifices himself.
Geology & Science
Fed by the Jökulsá á Fjöllum river (which originates from the Vatnajökull glacier), the water is grey and sediment-rich ('glacial milk'). The canyon, Jökulsárgljúfur, was carved by catastrophic glacial floods (Jökulhlaups) thousands of years ago. The waterfall is 45m high and 100m wide.
Safety
There are two sides: West (Route 862 - Paved, with viewing platforms) and East (Route 864 - Gravel, rough). The West side is safer and open longer in the season. The spray is so intense it can soak you in seconds, making the paths muddy and slick. The mist is often visible from miles away.
Photo Tip
The scale of Dettifoss is almost impossible to capture. Try to include people on the viewing platform on the opposite side to give a sense of size. The spray is a nightmare for lenses – bring a towel and check your glass constantly. The West side offers a full frontal view; the East side gets you closer to the lip.
Insider Tip
The East side (Route 864) is a rough gravel road but lets you get terrifyingly close to the water's edge. The West side (Route 862) is paved, safer, and offers better panoramic viewing platforms.
Best Time to Visit
Summer afternoons. The sun hits the canyon perfectly, often creating massive, vibrant rainbows in the heavy mist rising from the falls.

A heavy windproof jacket. The sheer volume and power of the falling water create a localized weather system of intense wind and cold mist.
