According to Norse mythology, this massive horseshoe-shaped canyon was created when Odin's eight-legged horse, Sleipnir, touched one of his hooves to the earth. It is considered the capital of the 'Hidden People' (Elves) in Iceland. The acoustics against the sheer cliffs are so perfect that it feels like a natural amphitheater.
Geology & Science
Scientifically, this wonder was carved by catastrophic glacial flooding (Jökulhlaups) from the Vatnajökull glacier thousands of years ago. The walls are up to 100 meters high. In the center stands 'Eyjan' (The Island), a distinctive rock formation left standing while the river washed everything else away. This area is the northernmost territory of the vast Vatnajökull National Park, protecting its unique birch forests and geological formations.

This is one of the safest hiking areas in Iceland, with well-marked trails through a rare birch forest. However, if you climb the cliff rim, stay well back from the edge as loose rocks are common. The area is a sanctuary, so drones are often restricted during nesting season.
