    The Drive

    The North's answer to the Golden Circle, but wilder and less crowded. This route takes you off Route 1 onto Route 85 and 862. The highlight is the drive to Dettifoss. Crucial Tip: Use Road 862 (West Side) which is paved and safe for all cars. Avoid Road 864 (East Side) unless you have a robust car and don't mind massive potholes and gravel.

    Is the Diamond Circle paved?

    Most of the route is now paved, including the main road from Ring Road 1 up to Dettifoss (Route 862) and on to Húsavík. However, some secondary access roads remain gravel.
