A steaming geothermal oasis on the F35 Kjölur highland route, sandwiched between the massive Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers.

Story & Legend

Located exactly in the middle of Iceland's interior, this nature reserve is the perfect halfway stop for those driving the F35. It was famously the hideout of the 18th-century outlaw Fjalla-Eyvindur, who used the hot springs to cook food and survive harsh highland winters.

Geology & Science

A high-temperature geothermal area sandwiched between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull ice caps. The colourful silica deposits and bubbling fumaroles create an otherworldly landscape.

Safety

Accessible via the F35 mountain road (4x4 recommended, though often passable for SUVs in summer). The water in the fumaroles is boiling – only bathe in the man-made pool.

Photo Tip

Sci-fi contrast of smoking pools against white glaciers. Steam rising at golden hour creates ethereal silhouettes.

Insider Tip

The natural hot pool fits about 20 people and offers a stunning view of the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers while you soak. Don't skip the short walking trail around the bubbling fumaroles.

Best Time to Visit

July and August, when the F35 Kjölur route is fully open and mostly free of snow.

What to Bring

Swimsuit, towel, and warm layers. The highland wind is notoriously freezing even in mid-summer.
