Story & Legend
On sunny days, massive rainbows arch over the canyon, adding to the magic of this 'Golden Waterfall'. In the early 20th century, foreign investors wanted to dam the river for hydroelectric power. Sigríður Tómasdóttir, a local farmer's daughter, walked barefoot to Reykjavík to protest and threatened to throw herself into the falls if the project went ahead. She is considered Iceland's first environmentalist, and her efforts saved the waterfall for us to enjoy today.
Geology & Science
The falls are on the Hvítá river, fed by the Langjökull glacier. The water plummets 32 meters in two stages (11m and 21m) into a rugged canyon. The 'Golden' name comes from the golden hue the glacial sediment takes on in the sunlight. The canyon walls reach up to 70 meters high.
Safety
The paths are well-maintained wooden boardwalks. However, the lower path (closest to the water) is closed in winter due to ice. The spray freezes on the rocks, making them deadly slippery. Always stay on the marked path; the canyon edge is unstable.

From the upper viewing deck, you can capture the triangular 'staircase' shape of the falls. Use a slow shutter speed (ND filter recommended) to smooth out the chaotic water. In winter, the frozen walls of the canyon look spectacular against the blue water.

Park at the upper lot to enjoy the visitor center and panoramic views first, then walk down the wooden staircase to the lower path to truly feel the deafening power of the roaring water.

A windbreaker and a waterproof outer shell. The lower viewing path gets heavy spray constantly blowing up from the canyon floor.
