    The Deep Dive

    Þingvellir: The Parliament in the Lava

    Walking here means walking in 'no-man's land'. The Almannagjá gorge marks the physical boundary where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart. It is also the site of the world's oldest parliament, established by Vikings in 930 AD.

    Geysir: The Original

    The English word 'Geyser' comes from here. While the Great Geysir is dormant, its brother Strokkur erupts reliably every 6-10 minutes, blasting boiling water up to 20 meters high.

    Gullfoss: The Golden Waterfall

    Massive and powerful. In the early 20th century, Sigríður Tómasdóttir walked barefoot to Reykjavík to protest a hydroelectric dam here. She is considered Iceland's first environmentalist, and thanks to her, the waterfall remains wild.

    Friðheimar Tomato Farm

    The Drive

    The Golden Circle is Iceland's most famous road trip for a reason: it packs the island's geological greatest hits into a single, manageable loop. The route is fully paved and maintained year-round, making it the safest option for first-time visitors. You'll be driving mostly on Route 36 (towards Thingvellir), Route 35 (Geysir/Gullfoss), and Route 35/1 back to Reykjavík. While the driving is easy, the scenery is dramatic—expect tectonic rifts, erupting geysers, and thundering waterfalls. In winter, these roads are plowed first, but always check road.is for ice warnings.

    Can you drive the Golden Circle in a 2WD car?

    Yes. In the summer (May to September), a standard 2WD car is perfectly fine as the entire route is paved. In winter, while the road is well-maintained, a 4WD vehicle with winter tires is strongly recommended due to unpredictable ice and snowstorms.

    Is the Golden Circle free?

    Yes, visiting the natural sites (Þingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss) is completely free. However, you must pay for parking at Þingvellir National Park and occasionally at other private stops along the way.

    A 3,000-year-old volcanic crater with vivid red soil and a neon-blue lake at the bottom. You can walk around the rim and down to the water level. The acoustics are so good that concerts have been held on the lake.

    A beautiful hike through a geothermal valley leads to a natural hot river where you can bathe. The higher up the river you go, the hotter the water.
