    The Deep Dive

    Þingvellir: The Parliament in the Lava

    Walking here means walking in 'no-man's land'. The Almannagjá gorge marks the western edge of the rift valley where the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates drift apart. It is also the site of the Alþingi, the parliament founded here in 930 AD.

    Geysir: The Original

    The English word 'Geyser' comes from here. While the Great Geysir is dormant, its brother Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes, blasting boiling water up to 30 metres high.

    Gullfoss: The Golden Waterfall

    Massive and powerful. In the early 20th century, Sigríður Tómasdóttir made long journeys to Reykjavík, on foot or on horseback, to fight plans for a hydroelectric dam here. She is often called Iceland's first environmentalist; the lease eventually lapsed, and Gullfoss was protected in 1979.

    Worth the detour

    Friðheimar Tomato Farm

    A surreal greenhouse where bees pollinate tomatoes year-round. Famous for their all-you-can-eat tomato soup served among the vines.

    Secret Lagoon (Gamla Laugin)

    Iceland's oldest swimming pool, built in 1891, in Flúðir. A rustic, smaller alternative to the Blue Lagoon, with a small geyser erupting nearby while you soak.

    Faxi Waterfall

    A smaller cousin of Gullfoss, a short detour south of Geysir, usually far quieter and better for photographs because of it.

    Efstidalur II

    A working dairy farm directly on the route. The ice cream is made on site and you eat it looking into the barn.

    The Drive

    The Golden Circle is Iceland's most famous road trip for a reason: it packs the island's geological greatest hits into a single, manageable loop. The route follows paved main roads that are normally serviced in winter — check road.is for conditions and ice warnings before you set out. You'll drive Route 36 to Þingvellir, Routes 365 and 37 across to Geysir, Route 35 on to Gullfoss and down to Selfoss, and Route 1 back to Reykjavík. While the driving is easy, the scenery is dramatic: tectonic rifts, erupting geysers, and thundering waterfalls.

    Total trip. Allow a full day to enjoy the stops — more if you add the Reykjadalur hike.

    Best start time. Leave Reykjavík before 9:00 AM to beat the tour buses, or after 2:00 PM between mid-May and mid-July for the midnight sun.

    Gas and food. Geysir has a service station and places to eat. Gullfoss has a café. For a unique lunch, book a table at Friðheimar (tomato greenhouse) in advance.

    How long does it take to drive the Golden Circle?

    The pure driving time is ~4 h 10 min for the full 248 km loop starting from Reykjavík. Allow a full day to comfortably explore all the main stops and take photos.

    Can you drive the Golden Circle in a 2WD car?

    Yes. In summer (May to September) a standard 2WD car is fine: the route follows paved main roads. In winter those roads are normally serviced, but ice and sudden snowstorms are common — winter tyres are strongly advised (from 1 November to 14 April tyres need at least 3 mm of tread and studs are allowed), a 4x4 helps, and check road.is and vedur.is the same morning.

    Is the Golden Circle free?

    Mostly. There is no entrance fee at Þingvellir, Geysir or Gullfoss, but you pay for parking at Þingvellir National Park, and some private stops along the way (such as Kerið) charge a small fee.

    Witness the raw power of nature. While the Great Geysir is dormant, its little brother Strokkur erupts every 5–10 minutes, shooting boiling water up to 30 metres into the air.

    Gullfoss

    Must see

    The Golden Waterfall.

    Gullfoss: The Golden Falls

    A massive, two-tiered waterfall that plunges about 31 meters, in two drops, into a rugged canyon. It creates a lot of spray, so you can often see rainbows on sunny days.

    Duration: 1 hour

    Tip: The lower viewing platform gets you very close to the action (and wet); the path down to it is sometimes closed in icy conditions.

    Kerið Crater

    Optional

    Volcanic crater lake.

    Kerið: The Red Eye

    A volcanic crater with vivid red soil and a neon-blue lake at the bottom. You can walk around the rim and down to the water level. The acoustics are so good that concerts have been held on the lake.

    Reykjadalur Hot Spring River

    Hike and bathe.

    A beautiful hike through a geothermal valley leads to a natural hot river where you can bathe. The higher up the river you go, the hotter the water. Stay on the marked trail — some pools are scalding.

    Duration: 3 hours (hike + bath)

    Tip: Bring a towel and hiking boots. The path can be muddy.
