Story & Legend
This is the most historically significant site in Iceland. It is where the Althingi (parliament) was founded in 930 AD, making it the oldest ongoing parliament in the world. It was here that Icelanders decided to convert to Christianity in 1000 AD and declared independence from Denmark in 1944. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Geology & Science
You are standing in a rift valley on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The massive rock wall (Almannagjá) is the edge of the North American plate, which is pulling away from Eurasia at about 2cm per year. It is one of the few places on Earth where you can walk between two tectonic plates (North American and Eurasian). Thingvellir sits directly on this boundary, making its geological significance as remarkable as its historical importance.
Safety
Stick to the paths. The area is full of deep fissures and cracks hidden by vegetation. Scuba diving in Silfra is popular but requires certification and a dry suit guide – the water is 2°C year-round. Drones are strictly banned here without a special permit.
Photo Tip
Photograph the Öxarárfoss waterfall flowing into the rift. The church (Þingvallakirkja) makes for a beautiful subject nestled in the valley floor, especially in autumn colors. For the tectonic plates, the walkway through Almannagjá offers the best perspective of the rock walls.
Insider Tip
Instead of just walking the main Almannagjá path, hike early in the morning to Öxarárfoss waterfall, and explore the quieter Flosagjá fissure to escape the massive Golden Circle tour bus crowds.
Best Time to Visit
Before 9:00 AM or after 5:00 PM. This is the first stop for most Golden Circle bus tours, so mid-day gets incredibly congested.
What to Bring
Comfortable walking shoes are fine for the main paths, which are well-maintained wooden boardwalks or flat gravel.
