Story & Legend
Located in Hvalfjörður just an hour from Reykjavík, this is the ultimate day-hike adventure. For centuries, Glymur was considered the highest waterfall in Iceland (198m) until Morsárfoss was discovered in 2011. Legend says a man was turned into a whale (Rauðhöfði) and tricked into swimming up the river into the canyon until he exploded from exhaustion, creating the waterfall. The canyon is named Hvalfjörður (Whale Fjord) after him.
Geology & Science
The river Botnsá falls into a deep, narrow canyon carved into basaltic bedrock. The hike offers a view of the layers of lava that built up the fjord over millions of years. It is a 'hanging valley' waterfall.
Safety
The log crossing is removed in winter. Do not attempt to cross the freezing river without it unless experienced. This is a proper hike (3-4 hours round trip). The path is steep and has loose gravel.
Photo Tip
The best view is from the east rim of the canyon. You need to hike higher than the top of the falls to see the water hitting the bottom. The depth of the canyon is dizzying; use a wide angle to capture the vertical drop.
Insider Tip
Hike the loop. Go up the right side of the canyon (crossing the log), view the waterfall from above, and then cross the shallow river at the very top of the falls to hike down the opposite side.
Best Time to Visit
Summer (June to September). During the winter and early spring, the crucial log used to cross the river is removed by authorities to prevent accidents on the ice.
What to Bring
Hiking boots with aggressive tread, and water shoes for crossing the river at the top of the waterfall where the water is freezing and the rocks are sharp.

It is challenging and requires a good head for heights. The trail skirts the edge of a massive canyon with sheer drops, and sections include holding onto ropes and walking across a log over a fast-flowing river.
Is Glymur the tallest waterfall in Iceland?
It was long considered the tallest (198 meters), but in 2011, a newly measured waterfall named Morsárfoss at the edge of the Morsárjökull glacier was confirmed to be taller (240 meters).
