Story & Legend
Gamla Laugin ("the old pool") in Flúðir was Iceland's first public swimming pool, built in 1891. After decades of neglect, it was restored in 2014. Unlike commercial lagoons, it remains a simple, natural pool fed by a hot spring, with a tiny geyser erupting every few minutes beside the pool.
Geology & Science
The pool sits in an active geothermal area where hot water surfaces naturally at 36-40°C. The surrounding ground steams and bubbles — a constant reminder of the volcanic forces beneath.
Safety
The surrounding hot springs are SCALDING (100°C) — stay on marked paths. Slippery when wet/icy in winter.
Photo Tip
Facilities are older and less private than Blue Lagoon. Bring your own towel to save rental fees.
Insider tip
Walk the short path around the perimeter of the pool before you get in. There is a miniature geyser (Litli Geysir) that erupts every few minutes right next to the bathing area.
Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon after completing the Golden Circle. It's the perfect way to warm up and relax before heading back to Reykjavík or further south.
What to Bring
Swimsuit. Towels can be rented on-site if you don't have your own. Unlike the Blue Lagoon, the water here is clear, so it won't damage your hair.

Is the Secret Lagoon better than the Blue Lagoon?
It offers a completely different, more traditional Icelandic experience. It is smaller, cheaper, less commercialized, and features natural hot spring water rather than silica-rich seawater.
Do you need to book the Secret Lagoon in advance?
Yes, while it is less famous than the Blue Lagoon, it is highly popular with Golden Circle tours. Pre-booking your ticket online is strongly recommended.
