Previously a 7km round-trip hike, a new paid parking lot now allows access in just a 5-minute walk. The free parking (3.5km hike) is still available for hikers. For years, Brúarfoss was a 'local secret' accessible only by trespassing through a holiday home area, which caused conflict. It is nicknamed 'Iceland's Bluest Waterfall' because of its striking glacial blue color.
Geology & Science
The waterfall is small in height but unique in shape. Thousands of tiny streams run through a rift in the dark volcanic rock, converging into a deep blue channel. The color comes from glacial silt (rock flour) suspended in the water, which scatters sunlight.
Safety
The log crossing is removed in winter. Do not attempt to cross the freezing river without it unless experienced. The free trailhead hike is 3.5km one way and takes about 2-3 hours. The path is flat but can be very muddy after rain. Do not attempt to cross the river anywhere except the bridge. The water is freezing cold and swift.
Photo Tip
The contrast of the milky blue water against the jet-black volcanic rock is the main subject. A polarizing filter (CPL) is essential here to cut the glare on the water surface and saturate the blue color. It looks best on cloudy days when the sky doesn't reflect on the water.

There is now a paid parking lot much closer to the waterfall, turning what used to be a muddy 3-hour round trip hike into a very easy 10-minute walk.
Best Time to Visit
Overcast days. Surprisingly, flat lighting brings out the neon blue color of the glacial water much better than bright, direct sunlight.

Comfortable walking shoes if using the new parking lot, or hiking boots if taking the older, longer trail.
