A violent, churning waterfall with a tragic legend, located next to Hraunfossar on the Silver Circle route in Borgarfjörður.
Story & Legend
Located just upstream from Hraunfossar, this waterfall has a tragic legend. Two young boys from the Hraunsás farm grew bored while their parents were at church and tried to cross a natural stone arch that spanned the river. They fell in and drowned. Their grief-stricken mother had the arch destroyed (or cursed it) so no one else would cross.
Geology & Science
The river Hvítá rushes out from underneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field. Here, it narrows violently and rushes through a twisted canyon of collapsed lava tubes. The water is a milky blue color (glacial flour) and churns with immense power, creating natural arches and potholes.
Safety
The currents here are deadly. There is absolutely no chance of survival if you fall in. Stay on the marked bridge and viewing deck. Do not attempt to climb down to the river level.
Photo Tip
Use a fast shutter speed (1/500s or faster) to freeze the violent churning of the water. The blue color is most intense on sunny days. Look for the small natural stone arch that still remains (not the one from the legend).
Insider Tip
Walk up the path past Hraunfossar to reach the pedestrian bridge spanning Barnafoss. Looking straight down into the churning, narrow gorge is the best way to feel the raw power of the river.
Best Time to Visit
After heavy rain or glacial melt. The water violently forces its way through a narrow, twisted canyon, creating a deafening roar.

Casual wear. It shares a parking lot and paved paths with Hraunfossar, making it highly accessible.
