    The Drive

    Often overlooked, the Silver Circle in West Iceland offers history, hot springs, and lava waterfalls without the Golden Circle crowds. You'll drive Route 1 through the tunnel (toll road) or the scenic fjord (Route 47), then explore the Borgarfjörður valley. The driving is easy, lowland, and very scenic.

    Driving time. The loop itself is 190 km and about 3 hours of driving. From Reykjavík and back, allow roughly 250 km and 4-5 hours.

    Total trip. Perfect lazy day trip (6-8 hours).

    The tunnel. The Hvalfjörður tunnel saves 1 hour but costs ~1.500 ISK (pay online at tunnel.is within 24h). Driving around the fjord (Route 47) is free and beautiful but adds time.

    Hraunfossar: The Lava Waterfalls

    A series of countless creeks and cascades streaming out of the Hallmundarhraun lava field into the Hvítá river — glacial water seeping straight out of the lava, forming a wall of small waterfalls a mile long, in a stunning turquoise. A few minutes upstream on the same path, Barnafoss (the Children's Falls) forces the whole river through a narrow chute.
