Story & Legend
Hraunfossar is unlike any other waterfall in Iceland. There is no river above it. The water seems to magically appear out of the lava wall itself. It flows from the Hallmundarhraun lava field, which was formed by an eruption under the Langjökull glacier around 930 AD – shortly after Iceland was settled. Just a short walk upstream lies Barnafoss ('Children's Falls'), a turbulent and mythical waterfall that offers a stark contrast to the serene beauty of Hraunfossar.
Geology & Science
The water is actually rain and meltwater that has filtered through the porous lava rock for years. When it hits a harder, impermeable rock layer at the bottom, it is forced sideways and weeps out of the lava edge into the Hvítá river. The water is filtered crystal clear and cold.
Safety
Very safe viewing platforms are provided. Do not jump the fences to get closer to the water; the lava is sharp and unstable. The wooden boardwalks can be slippery when wet.
Photo Tip
This is a panoramic location. A standard lens is too narrow to capture the full 900-meter width of the falls. Use a wide-angle or stitch multiple photos. In autumn (September/October), the bushes turn vibrant red and yellow, contrasting beautifully with the blue water and black lava.
Insider Tip
Walk the path all the way to the pedestrian bridge over the roaring Barnafoss, but the best photos of Hraunfossar's delicate streams are actually taken right from the main viewing platform near the parking lot.
Best Time to Visit
Autumn (September/October). The low scrub brush growing directly on the lava field turns vibrant autumn colors, contrasting perfectly with the milky blue glacial water.
What to Bring
Casual clothes. This is a very accessible 'park and view' location with flat, paved paths suitable for everyone.
