Construction began during Iceland's 2007 economic boom, then the catastrophic 2008 financial crash almost killed the project entirely. It sat half-built for months. Completed as a powerful symbol of national resilience, it opened in 2011 and won the prestigious EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture. The dazzling façade was designed by acclaimed Danish-Icelandic artist Ólafur Elíasson.
Geology & Science
Elíasson's façade modules are based on a 'quasi-brick' — a 12-sided geometric shape that, exactly like Iceland's natural volcanic basalt columns, can tessellate seamlessly in three dimensions. Thousands of LED panels inside the glass shift color throughout the day and night, mimicking the Aurora Borealis and the shimmering ocean.
