Story & Legend
In 2001, construction workers stumbled upon a Viking Age longhouse dating to around 871 AD (±2 years, confirmed by a volcanic tephra layer). Instead of demolishing it, the city built a museum around it — one of the oldest human structures in Iceland.
Geology & Science
The dating precision comes from a layer of volcanic tephra from a known eruption of Katla. This "Settlement Layer" is found across Iceland and serves as a geological timestamp for Viking colonization.
