Story & Legend
Hallgrímskirkja took 41 years to build (1945-1986). Architect Guðjón Samúelsson designed its façade to resemble basalt column formations found at Svartifoss and Reynisfjara. Named after the 17th-century poet Hallgrímur Pétursson, author of Iceland's most beloved Passion Hymns.

The design references columnar basalt — hexagonal lava columns formed when lava cools slowly. At 74.5m tall, it's visible from almost anywhere in the capital.
