The spectacular 'Feather River Canyon' near Kirkjubæjarklaustur. A serpentine, moss-covered gorge made world-famous by Justin Bieber.

Story & Legend

Located on the South Coast, this 100m deep canyon winds like a snake through the landscape. It became world-famous overnight after Justin Bieber filmed his 'I'll Show You' music video here, which led to a massive influx of tourists and temporary closures to protect the fragile vegetation. It is believed to have been formed at the end of the last Ice Age, about 9,000 years ago.

Geology & Science

The canyon is about 100 meters deep and 2 kilometers long. It cuts through hyaloclastite (soft volcanic rock) and is covered in vibrant green moss. The river Fjaðrá winds through the bottom, creating a sinuous path that contrasts sharply with the vertical cliffs.

Safety

Stay on the steel platforms. The moss is ancient and fragile – stepping on it destroys it for decades. Rangers are present. The path is an easy uphill walk (approx. 20-30 mins one way) but can be slippery in winter.

Photo Tip

The classic shot is from the final viewing platform at the top, looking back down the winding river. The depth and curves of the canyon are best captured with a wide-angle lens. Drone flying is strictly prohibited here to protect wildlife and peace.

Insider Tip

The hike goes uphill along the canyon edge. Make sure you walk all the way to the final viewing platform at the end of the trail for the absolute best, most comprehensive view of the winding river and cliffs.

Best Time to Visit

Early morning. The canyon trail is narrow, and getting stuck behind large tour groups can ruin the peaceful atmosphere.

What to Bring

Hiking boots. The trail is mostly dirt and gravel, which turns into slippery mud during the frequent Icelandic rain showers.
