Where in Iceland
Typical visit20 minutes

The world's largest lava field from a single eruption, covered in a thick, alien-looking blanket of green moss. Located on the South Coast.

Story & Legend

Prime territory for the Huldufólk (Hidden People). Folklore warns never to disturb the moss or throw stones here, lest you anger the unseen inhabitants.

Geology & Science

Formed during the deadly Laki eruption (1783-1784). The thick woolly moss has taken centuries to grow over the sharp rock. The 1783 Laki eruption was so massive it cooled the global climate and caused crop failures across Europe, contributing to the start of the French Revolution.

Safety

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WALK ON THE MOSS. It takes decades to recover. Use designated stopping areas.

Photo Tip

Get low to capture the texture. Misty conditions enhance the fairytale vibe.

Insider Tip

Do not pull over on the shoulder of the Ring Road to take photos. Use the designated scenic viewpoints and parking lots built specifically for viewing the lava fields safely.

Best Time to Visit

Late summer or after a period of rain, when the thick woolly fringe moss turns a vibrant, glowing, neon green.

What to Bring

A camera with a good zoom lens so you can photograph the textures of the moss without actually having to walk on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't you walk on the moss in Iceland?

The Icelandic moss takes decades to grow over the harsh lava rock. A single footprint can destroy the delicate ecosystem, and it may take 50 to 100 years for the footprint to disappear.

Did astronauts train in Iceland?

Yes! The Apollo 11 crew, including Neil Armstrong, trained in the Eldhraun lava field because its desolate, jagged, and rocky geology closely resembled the surface of the Moon.
