Known as the 'Fire Canyon', it was formed in 934 AD during one of the largest volcanic eruptions in human history. The sheer volume of lava produced (over 18 km³) was enough to cover the entire country of Denmark. For centuries, this place was feared by Vikings, who believed the apocalyptic fire was a sign of Ragnarök. The eruption released so much sulfur into the atmosphere that it cooled the entire northern hemisphere.
Geology & Science
Geologically, Eldgjá is part of the massive Katla volcanic system. It is the largest volcanic canyon in the world, stretching over 40km long and reaching depths of 600 meters. Unlike water-eroded canyons, this fissure was torn open by the earth splitting apart. Inside flows the Nyrðri-Ófæra river, creating the majestic Ófærufoss waterfall. The canyon walls display vivid layers of red magma and black basalt.
