The famous 'Rainbow Mountains' of Iceland located in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Hike through colorful rhyolite peaks and bathe in a natural geothermal river.
Story & Legend
Known as the pearl of the central highlands, this area offers landscapes that look like an oil painting. Landmannalaugar is arguably the most colorful landscape in Iceland. Historically, it was a remote resting spot for weary travelers crossing the highlands who would bathe in the natural geothermal rivers. It is the starting point of the famous Laugavegur trek (55km to Thórsmörk). The name means 'People's Pools'.
Geology & Science
The mountains here are made of Rhyolite, a silica-rich volcanic rock that cools into shades of pink, green, yellow, and blue depending on the mineral content and sunlight. The Laugahraun lava field is a massive obsidian flow (dragon glass), creating a stark black contrast against the painted hills.
Safety
ACCESSIBLE ONLY MID-JUNE TO SEPTEMBER. You need a 4x4. The F-roads (F208 North is easiest, F208 South is scenic but harder) involve river crossings. The hot springs are natural rivers; check the temperature before jumping in as current shifts can bring scalding water. 'Swimmer's itch' (harmless but annoying) is occasionally reported.
Photo Tip
Hike up to Brennisteinsalda ('Sulphur Wave') for the classic panorama. The contrast between the black lava field, the green moss, and the orange mountain is best captured under soft light (golden hour). Midday sun can wash out the pastel colors.
Insider Tip
If you don't want to drive your rental 4x4 through the deep river crossing right before the campsite, park in the large lot just before the river and use the pedestrian footbridge to cross into the camp.
Best Time to Visit
July and August. The highland roads (F-roads) to Landmannalaugar are completely closed due to snow for the rest of the year.
What to Bring
A swimsuit, a quick-dry towel, and sturdy hiking boots. The hike up Mt. Bláhnjúkur is steep and loose, but the soak in the natural geothermal river afterward is the ultimate reward.
