    Svínafellsjökull: The Ice Planet

The alien glacier from Interstellar and Batman Begins, located in Skaftafell (Vatnajökull National Park).

    Story & Legend

When Christopher Nolan needed an inhospitable alien world for Interstellar ("Mann's Planet"), he chose this glacier. Its jagged, blue surface also served as Bruce Wayne's training ground in Batman Begins and the lands "Beyond the Wall" in Game of Thrones. It is a tongue of the massive Vatnajökull ice cap, known for its sharp ridges and deep crevasses that resemble dragon scales.

    Geology & Science

The ice here is so compressed that it expels all air bubbles, creating an intense crystalline blue color. Listen closely: the glacier is alive, constantly cracking and groaning as it moves.

    Safety

The access road is notorious for deep potholes – drive slowly. Do NOT hike on the ice without a guide; fatal accidents happen here. Be aware that this area is monitored for landslide risks from the unstable Mt. Svínafell above. Stay in marked zones.

    Photo Tip

Use a zoom lens to compress the perspective and capture the scale of the blue ice walls against the black volcanic ash.

    Insider Tip

The short hike from the parking lot takes you to incredible panoramic views, but NEVER walk onto the actual ice without a certified glacier guide and crampons. The deep, hidden crevasses are deadly.

    Best Time to Visit

Overcast days. Bright sunlight washes out the deep, vivid blue colors of the ancient, highly compressed glacier ice.

    Duration: 1 hour

    What to Bring

Sturdy hiking boots. The path along the edge of the glacier is rocky, uneven, and runs close to steep drops into the glacial meltwater.
