Story & Legend
Nestled in the shadow of the Öræfajökull volcano, this church looks like it belongs in the Shire. Built in 1884, Hofskirkja is the last turf church ever built in the old style. It is one of only six remaining turf churches in Iceland that are preserved as historical monuments. It is still a practicing parish church! The burial mounds in the cemetery surrounding it look like hobbit holes, covered in moss and grass.
Geology & Science
The walls are made of rock and turf (sod) to provide insulation against the harsh Icelandic winters. The roof is made of stone slabs covered in turf, which helps it blend perfectly into the landscape. This architectural style was a necessity in a land with very little timber.
Safety
This is an active cemetery. Please be respectful – do not walk on the graves or climb on the church walls. The turf is fragile and historical. There are no toilets here; the nearest facilities are at the gas station in Freysnes.
Photo Tip
The texture of the mossy hummocks in the graveyard makes for a fairytale foreground. Low-angle shots work best here. Overcast days enhance the green saturation of the moss, making it look almost neon against the dark wood of the church facade.

Please be incredibly respectful and stay strictly on the gravel paths. The bumpy, moss-covered mounds surrounding the church are actually centuries-old graves of local Icelanders.
