Just across the road from the lagoon lies the Diamond Beach. Here, the icebergs that drifted out to sea are polished by the waves and washed back onto the jet-black volcanic sands. They glisten like diamonds against the dark beach, creating a stark, surreal contrast. No two visits are the same, as the ice formations melt and shift with every tide.
Geology & Science
The black sand is basalt lava that has been eroded over millennia. The ice chunks vary from palm-sized 'diamonds' to car-sized monoliths. The interaction between the white ice, blue water, and black sand makes this one of the most unique landscapes on Earth.
Safety
Never turn your back on the ocean. The waves here are powerful and can surge unexpectedly, creating a risk of being pulled in or knocked over by floating ice chunks (which are heavier than they look). Keep a safe distance from the surf line. NEVER climb on icebergs that are in the water. A sudden wave can lift the ice and sweep you out to sea instantly.
Photo Tip
Get low! Place your camera near the ground to capture the light shining through the clear ice chunks. Use a slow shutter speed (0.5s - 2s) with a tripod to capture the movement of the waves retreating around the stationary ice, creating a 'silky water' effect.
Insider Tip
Most tourists stop right next to the bridge where the icebergs first wash up. Walk 300 meters further down the beach to find massive, crystal-clear ice blocks with absolutely nobody else in your photos.

Winter mornings for sunrise, or immediately after high tide when a fresh batch of glacier ice has been pushed ashore by the ocean.
What to Bring
Waterproof boots are essential. The freezing waves can sneak up quickly while you are distracted photographing the ice, and wet feet will ruin your day.

Yes, but you must be extremely cautious of 'sneaker waves'. Never turn your back to the ocean, and absolutely never climb on floating icebergs, as they can flip and trap you underwater in seconds.
