During the 1940s and 50s, the 'Herring Adventure' turned this tiny, isolated fjord into the Klondike of the Atlantic. Thousands of workers flocked here, living in wild, chaotic conditions, dancing, drinking, and salting fish 24 hours a day under the midnight sun, generating over 20% of Iceland's entire export income.

Siglufjörður is squeezed into a narrow, dramatic fjord surrounded by the towering, avalanche-scarred peaks of the Tröllaskagi (Troll Peninsula). Until the massive, modern Héðinsfjarðargöng tunnels were blasted through the mountains in 2010, the town was only accessible via a terrifying, narrow mountain pass that was completely closed by snow for half the year.

The drive to Siglufjörður from Akureyri or Hofsós is spectacular but requires driving through several long, single-lane tunnels with passing places. You must yield to oncoming traffic if the passing place (marked with an 'M') is on your right side. Drive slowly and turn on your headlights.
