An imposing, sheer-sided island fortress in Skagafjörður. Famous as the hideout of outlaw Grettir the Strong and a prime destination for puffin watching tours.
Story & Legend
Central to the saga of Grettir the Strong, the outlaw who lived in exile on this inaccessible island for three years with his brother Illugi and slave Glaumur. He was eventually slain here, not by men in fair combat, but through a curse and witchcraft. To prove his strength, Grettir famously swam 7 kilometers through the freezing ocean to the mainland just to fetch glowing embers for his fire.
Geology & Science
A 180m high volcanic tuff cliff, the remains of a 700,000-year-old volcano that has been battered by the Arctic ocean. The sheer vertical walls make it a massive, predator-free nesting ground for thousands of Atlantic puffins, guillemots, and ravens.
Safety
Accessible only by guided boat tours departing from Reykir. The climb to the grassy summit is physically demanding and terrifying for those afraid of heights. It involves hauling yourself up steep, narrow cliff paths using old ropes, chains, and ladders anchored into the rock.
Photo Tip
The boat ride offers great silhouette views of the island's blocky shape against the horizon. The top offers spectacular panoramic views back to the fjords. Use a fast shutter speed to capture the puffins diving off the cliffs.
Insider Tip
The boat ride can be bumpy, but the real challenge is the hike up the island. It involves steep stairs and holding onto ropes, so only go if you are comfortable with heights.

Summer (June-August) when the puffins are nesting and the boat tours from Reykir are operating.

Sturdy hiking boots and windproof layers. The climb up the cliff face requires excellent grip and stamina.
