    Where in Iceland
    Typical visit1.5 hours

A high-tech interactive exhibition about Iceland's volcanic activity.

    Story & Legend

Located in Hvolsvöllur on the South Coast, the Lava Centre opened in 2017 as Iceland's premier volcano exhibition. Interactive displays let you feel simulated earthquakes and explore the underground magma systems beneath Katla, Eyjafjallajökull, and Hekla.

    Geology & Science

The centre sits in the shadow of three major volcanic systems. The real-time seismic monitoring display shows live earthquake activity beneath your feet. The exhibition explains Iceland's position on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

    Safety

Indoor museum — no safety concerns. Some simulations may startle very young children. Located right on Route 1 with easy parking.

    Photo Tip

Great for geology geeks, but pricey. If you're on a budget, the free cinema in the lobby is a decent teaser.

    Insider Tip

Pay for the full exhibition ticket, not just the cinema. The interactive 'magma corridor' and the room that simulates the physical shaking of an earthquake are the real highlights.

    Best Time to Visit

A perfect stop when driving the South Coast, especially if the weather is terrible. It's located right on Route 1 before you reach Seljalandsfoss.

    What to Bring

    Casual indoor clothes.
