According to the Book of Settlements (Landnámabók), the fjord was settled in the 9th century by Helgi Magri (Helgi the Lean). For centuries, it was a major trading post for foreign merchants, earning a reputation for wealth, witchcraft, and fierce independence from Reykjavík.

Ísafjörður sits on a curved spit of sand and gravel (an 'eyri') extending into the fjord. The surrounding mountains, Eyrarfjall and Kirkjubólsfjall, are characterized by steep, terraced basalt layers that trap the town in deep shadows during the winter solstice, creating a unique microclimate.
Safety
The mountains above the town are notoriously steep and prone to avalanches in winter. Always check road.is before driving the winding mountain passes (like Súðavíkurhlíð) leading into town, especially between November and April.
