The 'Jewel of the Westfjords'. A magnificent series of waterfalls resembling a bridal veil, fanning out over 100 meters wide at the bottom.
Story & Legend
Access has improved significantly with the opening of the Dýrafjarðargöng tunnel, making the drive from Ísafjörður easier. It is the undisputed icon of the region. Dynjandi means 'The Thunderer' or 'Resounding'. It resembles a bridal veil, widening from 30m at the top to 60m at the bottom. Below the main fall, there are 6 other named waterfalls you pass on the hike up.
Geology & Science
The cumulative height is 100 meters. The step-like structure is due to layers of lava flows. As the water cascades over these basalt steps, it fans out. The Westfjords are the oldest part of Iceland (16 million years old), so the landscape here is more eroded and dramatic than the rest of the country.
Safety
While the tunnel helps, the mountain passes in the Westfjords are still steep and gravel in parts. Winter access is often impossible. The hike up takes 20 mins and passes 6 smaller waterfalls.
Photo Tip
You need a person in the frame at the base of the main fall to show the sheer scale. Use a slow shutter speed (1/4 sec) to emphasize the 'veil' effect of the water fanning out. Don't ignore the smaller waterfalls on the way up; 'Göngufoss' allows you to walk behind it.
Insider Tip
Take your time walking up the path. There are actually six smaller, beautifully named waterfalls (like Hundafoss and Strompgljúfrafoss) along the river before you even reach the massive main cascade at the top.
Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon or early evening in summer. The Westfjords are remote, and the evening light on the massive bridal-veil falls is magical.

A waterproof jacket. The hike up to the base of the main waterfall will get you sprayed with a fine mist.
