This small lava cave became world-famous as the filming location for the romantic scene between Jon Snow and Ygritte in 'Game of Thrones'. Historically, it was a popular bathing site for the outlaw Jón Markússon in the 18th century. Local legend says trolls lived in the darker corners, keeping people away.
Geology & Science
It is a fissure created by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. The water was once perfect for bathing (38-40°C), but volcanic eruptions at nearby Krafla (1975-1984) caused the temperature to spike to over 50°C. It has cooled down slightly but is still unpredictable.
Safety
BATHING IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. The water temperature is unstable and the rock ceiling is loose. It is on private land, so respect the signs. The cave entrance is narrow and slippery – watch your head.
Photo Tip
The cave is dark. You need a tripod and a long exposure to capture the intense blue color of the water. A beam of sunlight often enters through the crack in the ceiling around midday, creating a 'spotlight' effect on the steam.
Insider Tip
The cave is on private land. You can climb down into it to take photos of the stunning blue water and the steam, but respect the signs and the fragile rock formations.
Best Time to Visit
Early morning. The cave is incredibly small, and getting stuck inside with a large tour group ruins the mystical atmosphere.
What to Bring
Sturdy boots. The entrance is a jagged crack in the earth, and you have to scramble down large, uneven boulders in near darkness to reach the water.
