A chaotic maze of lava towers near Lake Mývatn. Known as the 'Gateway to Hell' and the filming location for the Wildling Camp in Game of Thrones.
Story & Legend
This twisted labyrinth of hardened lava pillars is said to be the connection between earth and the infernal regions. In Icelandic folklore, it is the capital city of elves and trolls, and most famously, the home of the 13 mischievous "Yule Lads". TV fans will recognize this frozen lava field as the real-life location for Mance Rayder's Wildling camp in Game of Thrones (Season 3).
Geology & Science
Created about 2,300 years ago during a massive eruption. Lava flowed over a lake, boiling the water underneath. The rising steam blew vents through the molten rock.
Safety
It is easy to get lost in the maze. Stick to the marked paths. Look for "Kirkjan" (The Church), a natural lava arch.
Photo Tip
Overcast days add to the moody, spooky atmosphere. Frame people walking through the arches to show the immense scale.
Insider Tip
Skip the short paved loop and take the 'Church Circle' (Kirkjuhringur) trail. It leads you to a massive, naturally formed lava arch that looks like a gothic cathedral.
Best Time to Visit
December if you have kids (the local 'Yule Lads' trolls make appearances) or early morning in summer to beat the Mývatn tour buses.
What to Bring
Fly nets for your head during the summer months. The Mývatn region is infamous for massive swarms of harmless but highly annoying midges (small flies).
