Question 1

What should I pack for Iceland in winter?

Accepted Answer

Focus on layering: merino wool base layers, a fleece mid layer, an insulated down jacket, and a waterproof windproof hard shell. Add a balaclava, heavy gloves, microspikes for icy paths, and a headlamp — Reykjavík gets only about 4 hours of daylight at the winter solstice. A swimsuit is worth packing year-round for hot springs.

Question 2

What should I pack for Iceland in summer?

Accepted Answer

You still need waterproof outer layers — rain and wind happen year-round. Pack lighter base layers, a fleece, your hard shell jacket and waterproof trousers, good hiking boots, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a sleep mask (from mid-May to late July it never truly gets dark). Pack a swimsuit for hot pots too.

Question 3

Do I need hiking boots for Iceland?

Accepted Answer

Yes — waterproof hiking boots are essential even if you're not planning serious hikes. Terrain at popular attractions like Þingvellir, Seljalandsfoss, and Skógafoss is rough, wet, and slippery. Regular trainers will get soaked and won't grip volcanic rock.

Question 4

Can I use credit cards everywhere in Iceland?

Accepted Answer

Cards are used for about nine in ten shop payments in Iceland, and Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. Know your card's PIN. Carry two cards from different banks as backup — if one gets blocked, you need the other.

Question 5

Do I need cash in Iceland?

Accepted Answer

Rarely. In 2022 about 92% of shop payments in Iceland were made by card and 7% in cash, according to the Central Bank of Iceland. Most visitors get through a trip without Icelandic króna.

Question 6

What do I need for camping in Iceland?

Accepted Answer

A tent rated for strong wind, a sleeping bag rated to at least 0°C, an insulated sleeping pad (R-value 3+), a camping stove with fuel canisters, dry bags, and a quick-dry towel. Consider the Iceland Camping Card if you'll stay at campsites in its scheme between May and mid-September. Check your airline's rules before flying with fuel canisters.

Question 7

Should I bring a swimsuit to Iceland?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Iceland has geothermal hot springs, a public swimming pool in most towns, and hot pots across the countryside, so you'll find a use for a swimsuit in any season.
