    The Drive

    Route 54 circles the Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano, and the whole peninsula fits into a single day. The roads are paved and scenic, winding through lava fields and coastal cliffs. Note that the mountain pass towards the south (near Búðir) can be foggy. If you plan to drive the full loop, we recommend going Clockwise: start with the southern coast (Arnarstapi) and end the day at Kirkjufell (North) for sunset.

    Logistics & Timing

    Driving time. The loop itself takes about 3-4 hours of pure driving, plus 2.5 hours to get there from Reykjavík.

    Total trip. Plan for a full 12-hour day if leaving from the capital.

    Gas. Fill up in Borgarnes before heading onto the peninsula. There are pumps in Grundarfjörður and Ólafsvík, but they are sparse in between.
