    The Drive

    Routes 54 and 574 take you round the peninsula and under the Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano, and the whole loop fits into a single day. The main roads are paved and scenic, winding through lava fields and coastal cliffs; in winter, check road.is before you set out. The Fróðárheiði pass between the two coasts can have poor visibility. If you plan to drive the full loop, we recommend going Clockwise: start with the southern coast (Arnarstapi) and end the day at Kirkjufell (North) for sunset.

    Logistics & Timing

    Driving time. The loop itself takes ~5 h 40 min of pure driving, plus ~1 h 20 min from Reykjavík to Borgarnes, the first stop.

    Total trip. Plan for a very full day — 12 hours or more — if leaving from the capital.

    Gas. Fill up in Borgarnes before heading onto the peninsula. There are pumps in Grundarfjörður, Ólafsvík and Stykkishólmur, and a single pump at Arnarstapi — not much in between.

    Is Snæfellsnes worth a day trip from Reykjavík?

    Yes, it is one of the best day trips from the capital. Reykjavík to Borgarnes, the first stop, is ~1 h 20 min each way; with the loop and the main stops, count on a 12-hour-plus day.

    Do I need a 4x4 for the Snæfellsnes Peninsula?

    No. The main roads around the peninsula (Routes 54 and 574) are paved and normally driven in a 2WD. From 1 November to 14 April tyres need at least 3 mm of tread and winter tyres are strongly advised — check road.is before you go.

    What is the famous mountain in Snæfellsnes?

    Kirkjufell (Church Mountain) is the most famous landmark on the peninsula, heavily featured in Game of Thrones. It is located on the northern coast near the town of Grundarfjörður.
