Hjallanes

The Hjallanes loop offers one of the most accessible yet dramatic views of the Vatnajökull glacier tongue. Unlike the crowded trails of Skaftafell, this route takes you through quiet birch forests and opens up onto vast gravel plains with the ice towering above. The contrast between the green vegetation and the blue ice is striking.

As you round the headland, the trail climbs gently to a viewpoint where you can see the glacier calving into the lagoon below. On clear days, the panorama stretches from Öræfajökull in the west to the Vestrahorn massif in the east.

The loop returns along the river bank, passing several small waterfalls fed by glacial melt. In summer, the wildflowers along this stretch are spectacular — purple lupins, yellow buttercups, and white cotton grass swaying in the breeze.
