During the 17th century, the isolated Strandir region was gripped by a witchcraft panic. Unlike the witch trials in mainland Europe or Salem, the vast majority of those burned at the stake in Iceland were men. They were accused of using ancient runic staves (Galdrastafir) to control the harsh weather, summon sea monsters, or steal milk from neighbors' sheep.

Hólmavík sits on the eastern shore of the Westfjords, sheltered inside the Steingrímsfjörður fjord. The landscape here transitions from the rolling hills of the mainland to the dramatic, jagged, and driftwood-strewn coastline of the Strandir region, a harsh environment that bred the superstition and desperation linked to local sorcery.
Safety
Hólmavík is reached via paved roads (Route 61 to Route 68). However, if you continue north past Hólmavík up the Strandir coast towards Djúpavík, the road quickly turns to rough, potholed gravel with sheer drop-offs into the ocean. Drive cautiously and watch for fog.

Inside the Museum of Sorcery, flash photography is prohibited, so bump up your ISO. The most famous (and macabre) exhibit is the replica of the 'Nábrók' or Necropants—trousers made from the skin of a dead man, which supposedly produced endless wealth for the sorcerer.
